Top 5 Funny Military Movies

There are definitely some funny military movies that every Soldier should watch.  Listed below, I want to share five of my top 5 favorite funny military movies of all time.

# 5 In the Army Now (1994)

I watched this movie right before I joined the Army.  In this movie Pauly Shore and his misfit friend join a water purification unit in the Army Reserves.  The movie covers their time at Basic Training and their deployment overseas.  If this movie doesn’t make you laugh, I’m not sure what will.

# 4 Star Ship Troopers(1997)

This masterpiece science fiction movie is one of my favorite military movies of all time.  While it might not be considered a comedy by some people, I think there are plenty of funny scenes in it, which is why I have it on this list.  Watch the humans fight the bugs.

# 3 Kelly’s Heroes (1970)

Let me start by telling you that it was hard picking a number one choice.  Any one of my top three movies could have been my # 1 pick.  Kelly’s Heroes is an all-time classic.  Starring Clint Eastwood, this movie is a variation of the famous “The Dirty Dozen” movie.  It’s a story where Eastwood and his comrades try to steal a bunch of gold from the Germans during WW2.

# 2 Stripes (1981)

Starring Bill Murray and John Candy, this movie will make you laugh until your stomach hurts.  Basically, Bill Murray is a loser who ends up joining the Army.   Watch his story through Basic Training and in the real Army.  If you can watch this movie without laughing, there’s probably something wrong with you.

# 1 Major Payne (1995)

I had to make Major Payne my top choice.  I know some people will disagree with me on this one, but I laughed longer (and more) with this movie than any other movie on my list.  MAJ Payne is a Marine war hero who gets assigned as a JROTC Instructor with a bunch of misfit kids.  This is a must see.

Final Thoughts

In summary, these are my top five funny military movies of all time.  I’d love to hear from you and learn what your favorite funny military movie is.  Just leave a comment and let me know.

  1. I never would have watched In the Army Now with Pauly Shore unless someone had taken over the television during a holiday. It was actually kind of funny! This list is pretty good, Chuck, but for the gals you could have listed Private Benjamin! Stripes is definitely number one for me :)

  2. I am totally in agreement with your choices here, but they would come in a different order. Maybe its my age, but Kelly’s Heroes would be #1. I really laughed my tail off to In the Army Now, and Major Payne too, but Stripes absolutely had to come in at #2. Last on the list would have been Starship Troopers. It was ok, but not the type of movie I would want to see more than once. Great post. I love to watch funny movies.

  3. This must have been a difficult list to narrow down to a top five. Especially with other great movies like Private Benjamin, Good Morning Vietnam, and Tropic Thunder rounding out the list of funny Military movies. Okay, so Private Benjamin is like the chick-flick answer to Stripes, but you really can’t deny the comedic chemistry between Goldie Hawn and Eileen Brennan. And Tropic Thunder may not be a traditional Military movie, but it’s hysterical nonetheless. Great list, though! I don’t normally go for Pauly Shore movies, but this was one that genuinely made me laugh.

  4. Major Payne is definitely the funniest military movie I’ve ever watched. Great list you got here, Chuck.

  5. Renaissance Man with Danny Devito, Gregory Hines, and Mark Wahlberg. Danny Devito plays a middle-aged business man who ends up getting fired from his job, and takes a position teaching reading and thinking skills to a group of outcasts in the Army. It’s funny in a real dorky kind of way, but I love it, and have to watch it from time to time. It’s like those old, faded, holey jeans that you should really give up on, but they are comfortable and familiar, so you keep hauling them out.

  6. Chuck, good call on MAJ Payne. I would have to say that that movie was one of my all time favorites growing up. I won’t say that it convinced me to join the military, but it is still one of those movies that I look back at from time to time and laugh at!
