Three Ideas That Can Change Your Life

I’ve been very fortunate to do a lot of dumb things in my life.  I say I’m fortunate because I tried to learn something from every bad decision and every bad experience.  Along the way, I’ve learned a few life changing ideas that I would like to share with you.  In fact, today I want to share three ideas that can change your life.  Let’s get started.

# 1 Set Goals

Without a doubt, desire is the first step to success.  You need desire, but more importantly you need to take that desire and convert it into written goals.  Everyone needs written goals.  This gives you something to pursue.  It gives you purpose and direction.  Without written goals, your desire is nothing more than a pipe dream.  At a minimum, you should draft up some long-term goals (life goals), five year goals, one year goals and monthly goals.  Start with your big goals first and then break them down into bite-sized chunks for your yearly and monthly goals.  Keep your list of goals together in a goal book.  Review your goals each month and each year to track your progress and make adjustments as needed.

# 2 Find a Mentor

If you really want big success in life, one of the best things you can do is find someone who has already accomplished what you are trying to do and get them as your mentor.  That way you can learn from their experiences and shorten your own learning curve.  Everyone needs a mentor; a personal coach. Study any top athlete, actor, politician or anyone else who is successful and you will quickly discover that they have several mentors.  You need to do the same thing.  You should have a mentor for your professional goals, one for your physical fitness, personal finances, family life, etc.  These mentors can provide valuable insights and help you solve your complex challenges in a simple manner.

# 3 Associate with People Who Have What You Want

Most parents are cautious about who their kids hang out with: and rightfully so.  But as an adult you also need to guard who you hang out with.  You are the result of your five closest friends, so make sure you keep good company.  Hang out with people who are successful, who are happy and moving forward with their life.  Avoid pessimists and people who tell you you can’t do something.   For instance, if you want to be a doctor, find some doctor friends.  If you want to be a CEO, find some CEO friends.  Keep good company and watch yourself grow.

Final Thoughts

In summary, these are three ideas that can change your life.  I highly encourage you to apply these principles in your life as quickly as you can.  The results will blow your mind! What are your thoughts?

Now go and have a great day!

  1. Chuck, these are three GREAT suggestions! You threw me for a curve when you said you were fortunate to do a lot of dumb things but there is so much truth to that! If we never make mistakes then we kind of go into a stasis. Learning from our mistakes means growth! Setting goals are so important. Even if you didn’t accomplish them you made steps to get there. It’s forward motion. #2 and 3 are closely linked. If you want to better yourself you need to surround yourself with people you aspire to be like! Misery may like company but success is contagious too! You have to be open to those opportunities and humble yourself.

  2. Learning from your mistakes is a great way to grow in your walk through life. I remember my mom always telling me to learn from her mistakes, but it just doesn’t happen that way. We all have to go down our own paths, experience things and have a past to rely on for future growth.

I can’t agree with you more about finding a mentor. While I was in business school I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with a lady who owns one of the large corporate trash facilities in the United States. I learned so much from her about starting my own business, maintaining a customer base and how to treat and recruit employees. It was such a great experience, the tips and knowledge you can obtain from someone who has been there, done that is phenomenal.

This could not be said any better or any simpler. What great advice for anyone, civilian or military, to follow to be successful in life. I think with having goals, the most important tip is to find a mentor. Most likely, if you can find someone who has the same goals and success, there is a good chance that person has made mistakes along the way that you may be able to learn from. Avoiding mistakes will help you reach your goals sooner!

    1. I share this advice with everyone I meet. But I don’t know any other person in my sphere of influence who actually writes down their goals. That one thing alone has transformed my life. Once you start writing down your goals, you will never stop. Your points about finding a mentor are spot on too. While most people will give you their advice, you should really only listen to people who have done what you are trying to do. Your wife, husband, parents and friends might think they have your best interest at heart, but they can’t advise you on how to do something they’ve never done themselves.

      1. I agree! Find someone who has done what you are trying to do! And for writing goals…people (even my GF) think I am crazy for doing this but it helps. BIG TIME! I re-visit those goals every 3 months or so to see if I am making progress, what I need to tweak to get there and what else I can do to get there quicker. You need to ID what your goals are, then create a roadmap and game plan for getting there!

        1. I’ve been doing this since 2002 and IT IS the reason I am successful. When you put your goals down on paper and refer to them often, something magical happens.
