My Favorite Army Weapon is the M2 50 Cal

Without a doubt, my favorite Army weapon of choice is the M2 50 Cal. Although I’m not a combat arms guy, I love the Ma Deuce.  It’s a powerful and effective weapon that can inflict some serious damage in a matter of seconds.

Here are a few specs about the M2 50 Cal:

  • First designed in 1918
  • More than 3 million built
  • Weighs 83.78 lbs
  • Length is 65.2 inches
  • Effective Rang is 2000 yards
  • Maximum range is 7400 yards
  • Rate of fire ranges from 485 to 1200 bullets per minute depending upon model
  • Typically mounted on vehicles such as boats and vehicles, but can also be used as a sniper rifle

Final Thoughts

I love the M2 50 Cal machine gun. I only got the chance to fire it a few times in my career, but I absolutely loved it. If you have experience shooting the M2, I would love to hear from. Please leave a comment to share your thoughts.

The M2 50 cal is considered John Browning’s greatest legacy. It was originally designed to be water cooled with a heavy water jacket, but fortunately the design was improved in the 1930’s. The M2 50 cal is still a favorite with not only American troops, but but troops across the world.

Trivia Tidbit: Audie Murphy earned his Medal of Honor with a 50 cal in 1945.

    1. Great comment, Amy.

The M2 50 CAL has been around for a long time and I don’t see it going away anytime soon in the military.

And thanks for educating me about what Audie Murphy did to get the Medal of Honor.

I didn’t know that Audie Murphy got his MoH from using the M2. That is pretty awesome. I guess I thought he ripped people apart with his bare hands or something!

  2. As an MGS and prior TC the .50 is my baby… Nothing quite like shooting it. It has stood the test of time since the 1940s and is still a extremely lethal piece of firepower for any platform. As long as you take care of it…i.e. lots of CLP (and I mean LOTS) and don’t treat it like its a small arms weapons (by that I mean let that damn bolt ride home on its own!) then she will work perfectly. I have such an affection for the .50 that I always chuckle when I am on a range and I hear distinct “POPS” from a HMMWV or Tank and I just know that the head/space and/or timing is off. Glad you posted this, Chuck…the .50 is a great weapon.

Justin, I know my husband is fond of the M2, it saved their collective rears on his first deployment along with their other crew served weapons. As a gunner, he definitely understood the importance of those weapon systems.
