Citizen Soldier 3 Doors Down

In November 2007, the rock group “3 Doors Down” came out with the song, “Citizen Soldier.”  This song is a tribute to Soldiers serving in the Army and Air Force National Guard.  The song was released on their self titled album “3 Doors Down.”

***** Check out the video.

Here are a few neat things about the song:

  • It was filmed in Camp Roberts, California
  • The video was frequently played in movie theaters, as a recruitment tool for the National Guard
  • It broke the top 100 (#96 spot) on the US Billboard Chart.
  • In 2008, the promotion was also put on Dale Earnhardt Jr.s # 88 car

Citizen Soldier Lyrics

Here are a sample of the lyrics:

Beyond the boundaries of your city’s lights,
Stand the heroes waiting for your cries.
So many times you did not bring this on yourself,
When that moment finally comes,
I’ll be there to help.

On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,
I’ll be right here.
Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.
Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,
We’ll always be ready because we will always be there.

When there are people crying in the streets,
When they’re starving for a meal to eat,
When they simply need a place to make their beds,
Right here underneath my wing,
You can rest your head.

Final Thoughts

I think the Citizen Soldier song by 3 Doors Down is pretty neat.  Not only is it patriotic, but it was a very different marketing tool for the National Guard.  Leave a comment and tell me what you think.

  1. This song is awesome, especially for the fact of paying tribute to all of the many Soldiers who work hard to protect our freedom. It is always great to listen to songs that are dedicated to those who serve in our military. 3 Doors Down did a great job and have really touched the hearts of Americans and our military leaders. Some other songs that I like that pay tribute to our Soldiers include:

-“Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue” – Toby Keith
-“8th of November” – Big & Rich (this one makes me cry every time)
    -“Arlington” – Trace Adkins

  2. I’ve always appreciated 3 Doors Down for their ability to capture the patriotic spirit in words, expressing the thoughts of countless soldiers and their spouses with songs like “Citizen Soldier” and “Love Me When I’m Gone.” Seeing musicians and entertainers pairing their talents in such a way as to support our troops is reminiscent of the days when Bob Hope and Marilyn Monroe would make special trips to entertain and thank the brave individuals who keep America the land of the free.

  3. This is one of my favorite tributes to our soldiers, rivalled only by \”American Soldier\” by Toby Keith. It\’s been around for quite some time, but is as relevant today as it was six years ago. Prior to \”Citizen Soldier\” being written and release, in 2003, 3 Doors Down also featured in the Busch Series on a car owned by Dale Ernhardt, Jr. and driven by Tony Stewart. The song is also featured on the band\’s fourth album.

  4. A co-worker of mine’s girlfriend actually works for the ad agency in VA for the NG. She is always telling me about all the new advertisements and other things they are working on. We actually had a discussion Monday night about the 3 Doors Down song/ad. She told me that they use REAL Soldiers for those videos too!

  5. PFC Thompson in the video was in my OCS class. Funny story. Of course one of the TACs recognized him and there was no shortage of crap given throughout the course.

      1. This is a great song and great video. I remember watching the video several times at the movie theater when my boyfriend and I were watching movies. I can see how it would help encourage people to join the National Guard.
