While all auto insurance companies should be double and triple checked to ensure the best price for the best coverage, some insurance companies out there cater to military personnel specifically. All families have different needs in the insurance department, and military families definitely have needs different from most.
I am including a list of auto insurance companies that will provide complete coverage at affordable rates; some of the companies on my list are specifically for military personnel alone, and some are programs developed by the company to include just military personnel alone, and the coverage they need.
- USAA Military Home, Life, and Auto Insurance: With USAA military service members can count on an average savings of $450 a year when they switch over to USAA. They offer accident forgiveness for good drivers for just a few dollars per month, and they offer safe driver (much like Allstate) and good student discounts. There are flexible payment options that are fixed around pay schedules. Military service members can also enjoy a 15% discount on comp. coverage if they garage their vehicle on base in most states. USAA also offers guaranteed renewal of auto policies. Added to the fact that USAA is able to be passed down through the generations of military family, USAA is among the best company for investment, insurance (life, home, and auto) and banking.
- Armed Forces Insurance (AFI): Though—in my opinion—this insurance company doesn’t seem as good as USAA, it offers coverage and custom policies specifically to military personnel. There are a number of different policies options, including PIP, comp and collision, etc. These usually differ depending on the state of residence. The customer service is reported to be excellent in any case. Spouses and family members and allowed drivers are also covered under policies with AFI.
- Geico Military Program: We all love that little gecko representing Geico insurance company. The military program with Geico offers a 15% military discount on all auto insurance premiums. They also offer coverage while military service members are overseas, a storage protection plan, and emergency deployment discounts. Geico also provides service and advice when preparing for deployment such as maintaining the policy, ensuring coverage for family members, and resources to help smooth out the bumpy road ahead when planning for deployment. Customer service representatives are available 24/7. Geico is also partnered with the Navy Federal Credit Union that ensures even more savings on everything from banking to auto insurance to loans.
These are just a few of the auto insurance companies that serve military personnel. Many auto insurance companies—including AllState, Progressive, and State Farm to name a few—offer discounts for military personnel as well as affordable premiums and monthly rates. No matter who you are, military or civilian, it is important to get a quote, talk to a representative, and ask any question to make sure that the insurance policy purchased is going to fit all needs of the family and the military service member. Feel free to include more of the best auto insurance companies for military personnel in the comments section to keep building this resource.

As a writer who has researched and authored many freelance articles about insurance coverage, I would have to agree that USAA offers some great deals for military. I would still always suggest that you shop around. There are so many factors that can come into play when you are considering auto insurance. The type of vehicle, where you reside and how far you drive, past tickets and accidents, and so much more. Sometimes the cheapest isn’t the best either. Check reviews of the insurance before you purchase it.
Best Auto Insurance for military personnel is a pertinent topic to save money and get the best deal. Auto-Owners Insurance scored top at 890 out of a possible 1000 in the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study according to Fox Business News site. I only bring them up because I know several who work for Dept. of Defense who use Auto-Owners. I researched the net to see what they might offer for military personnel. Found nothing. I would contact a local rep to find out and further comment here. I didn’t know that Navy Federal Credit Union had partnered with the Geico Military Program.
Great rates are definitely important. I found that to a local insurance broker can help in finding the best rates. Broker’s can check into which companies have discounts for veterans. Also, check with colleges or universities you graduated from. Some Alumni discounts are amazing. Lastly, an insurance company’s customer service is an important factor. Sometimes it is worth it to pay a little more for insurance from a company that has a higher customer service rating. Those companies with good customer service are worth the extra money as, from my experience, they are there for customers more than a lot of the other firms. I like Erie Insurance (and no, I do not work for Erie).
I will recommend USAA 100% of the time if any military member ever asks me what auto insurance they should go with. I’ve had absolutely zero hassles out of them since I first started using them in 2007. Their rates are also the best that I could find.
It also helps that they do many other things besides insurance. In one call I can take care of insurance and banking. The convenience is great and the service is wonderful.
I hate to sound like a USAA spokesman but I seriously would recommend it to anyone.
I’m a big fan of USAA Auto Insurance too. When it comes to auto insurance for military Soldiers, USAA is hands down the best company out there.
I have used USAA for the last 7 years, and they have been nothing short of wonderful and professional to me. I have a couple friends that worked at the actual office in San Antonio, and they liked working for them. For me, they provide the best rates and easily combined all my insurance into one place, and having one payment come out of my USAA account every month makes my life much easier. Their deployment support is top notch, as well.
There are many great insurance companies willing to do business with you in the US, but USAA has the ability to give military families great rates because the company works with a limited market, thereby limiting their risk (of paying claims). They also offer just about any kind of insurance you could ask for: auto, home, renters, life, and even a wide range of banking services. The company has a high customer satisfaction and retention rate. What’s not to like?
Faye,
You are spot on. I use USAA insurance myself and absolutely love their products, services and customer service. I’ve been a member since 2000 and wouldn’t even consider leaving them for another insurance company. Since we moved to Florida this year, we cannot use them for our home insurance, since USAA does not insure homes in Florida. That’s too bad.
They are a great insurance company for military personnel.

I also found that military.com has some great info for military personnel when looking for auto insurance.
Lauren,
I just went and checked out the military.com website. They do have some great resources and online calculators for finding affordable auto insurance for military personnel and veterans. Thanks for sharing.

If I had my choice I would probably go with Geico. The fact that they offer advice when preparing for deployment such as maintaining the policy and keeping my family covered is hugely important.
Geico is a good auto insurance company for military personnel.
I’ve been with USAA myself since 2000 and swear by them. Whenever I do a price comparison with another insurance company, I find they are normally at least 50% cheaper. I’ve never found any auto insurance company with their kind of prices or service.
Even if I did, it would take a lot to get me to switch. USAA Auto Insurance has been good to me through the years and I have a lot of loyalty toward them.
