In today’s post, we are going to delve into a job that is of high importance in the United States Army. We will study the duties, responsibilities and job description of the Army 890A Ammunition Warrant Officer.
The Army 890A Ammunition Warrant Officer is part of the United States Army Ordnance Corps. The Ordnance Corps main mission is to supply combat units with weapons and ammunition. The Army 890A Warrant Officer is involved with the ammunition aspect of the Ordnance Corps. He/she must live by the Army Ordnance Soldier’s Creed which says:
“As an Ordnance Soldier of the United States Army, I will utilize every available talent and means to ensure that superior mobility, firepower, and communications are advantages enjoyed by the United States Army over its enemies. As an Ordnance Soldier, I fully understand my duty to perform under adverse conditions and I will continually strive to perfect my craft. I will remain flexible so that I can meet any emergency. In my conduct, I will abide by the Soldier’s code. In my support mission in the field, I will use every available skill to maintain superiority; I will always be tactically and technically proficient As an Ordnance soldier, I have no greater task.”
Job Description
The 890A Warrant Officer’s job description consists of, but is not limited to the storage, issuance and receipt, accountability, inspection, safety, maintenance and any other aspects of military ammunition which could include:
Training ammunition
Ammunition residue
Ammunition components
and any other forms of ammunition
Duties and Responsibilities
The Army 890A Ammunition Warrant Officer must supervise and manage the SAAS (Standard Army Ammunition System) at every conceivable level. He/she will create and implement ammunition storage operation plans. These will include:
Transportation flow
Firefighting procedures
Emergency destruction procedures
Security procedures
Safety procedures
He/she will also prepare and review ammunition storage waivers, along with investigating ammunition accidents, malfunctions and failures. The Army 890A Warrant Officer will report any of these to the proper channels.
Along with these responsibilities, the Army 890A Warrant Officer will also perform other Officer duties that are essential to completing unit missions. This could consist of training and advising or leading in combat exercises.
Requirements
There are several requirements a Soldier must have to apply for the position of an Army 890A Warrant Officer. He/she must be an E5 Sergeant or above. They must be a graduate of Advanced Leadership Course (ALC). They must have a written recommendation from a senior Warrant Officer. They must show copies of their last 5 NCOERs showing a leadership capacity in a comparable MOS. Some of the MOS positions that are comparable are:
89A which is ammunition stocking
89B is ammunition specialist
89D explosive ordnance disposal
Civilian experience in a related field will be taken into consideration.
